Cognitive reserve, brain volume and the rate of cognitive decline Lead Investigator: Seong Yoon Kim Institution : UC Irvine E-Mail : seongyk1@uci.edu Proposal ID : 1070 Proposal Description: It is still not clear how cognitive reserve and brain reserve influence the conversion of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) to Alzheimer?s disease (AD), or the progression of AD. Factors associated with the AD conversion or AD progression will be investigated in regard to intracranial volume (ICV), demographic factors, and biological factors such as APOE4 genotypes and Abeta level in CSF. Hypotheses to be tested are 1) High education (HE) and large brain (LB) subjects may have later onset of age for MCI. 2) Once they develop MCI or convert to AD, the progress is more rapid than low education (LE) or small ICV (SB) group. 3) This effect may be associated with education, premorbid intelligence, sex, and APOE genotype.
